Record breaking end to the season. Congratulations everyone!

The Perthshire Highland Games season ended at Pitlochry Highland Games, with Stuart Anderson and Lorne Colthart both breaking ground records. Stuart increased his own Weight for Distance record to 68’1” whilst nineteen year old Lorne’s Putt of 45’ 9 ½” broke Michael Simpson’s 9 year old record by over 3’. Lorne also narrowly missed out on breaking the long standing Hammer record set in 1970 by Donald Ross.

Pitlochry also saw the culmination of the season’s competitions with the Heavy events, Highland Dancing and Junior Piping Leagues being finalised. There were new winners in all Leagues except the Junior Heavy events.

Donald Riddell of sponsors Highland Safaris presented the Heavy events League winners with medals and cheques as follows:

1st Stuart Anderson, Killin (£500); 2nd Lorne Colthart, Blair Atholl (£375); 3rd Pete Hart, Glenisla (£250); 4th David Colthart, Blair Atholl (£150); 5th Jamie Thexton, Bridge of Gaur (£75) ; 6th David Colthart Jnr, Blair Atholl (£50).

Junior League; 1st Lorne Colthart (£80); 2nd David Colthart Jnr (£60); 3rd Grant Watson, Alyth (£50); 4th David Bridge, Bridge of Cally (£40).

Winning the Dancing League for the first time was Isla Bendall, Crieff (£200); 2nd Jillian Kennedy, Aberfeldy (£150), 3rd Melissa Collins, Blairgowrie (£100), 4th Ailidh Lang, Callander (£80); 5th Lyndsey Douglas, Birnam (£60); 6th Rachel McLagan, Blairgowrie (£50).

In the Junior Piping, Connor Sinclair of Crieff took the first prize of £150, from second placed George Stewart, Perth (£100) and Alex Duncan, Burrelton in third place who won £50.

The sportsmatch award which Perthshire Highland Games Association received at the start of the year has allowed many School age athletes the opportunity to take part in Highland Games throwing sessions. Breadalbane Academy, Aberfeldy and Crieff Scouts were two of the groups involved. Two competitions were also held for under 14 and under 16 boys and girls at Kenmore and Pitlochry Highland Games. Perthshire Highland Games Association wishes to thank our sponsors, supporters and competitors for all their support this year.

There will be a meeting for all Games Members on Thursday 8 October in the Mid-Atholl Hall, Ballinluig at 7.30pm

Another record bites the dust

The Perthshire Highland Games Leagues are now 2/3 through the season and several records have been broken in the Highland Safaris Heavy Events mostly by Killin’s Stuart Anderson. Having broken the Perthshire record at the Atholl Gathering with a Putt of 46’10”, Stuart has set another Perthshire record at Rannoch on Saturday with a throw of 72’ 8” in the 28lb Weight for Distance. This throw broke Pete Hart’s record by over 4 feet.

Out with the Perthshire League, nineteen year old Lorne Colthart from Blair Atholl set a personal best in the 16lb Hammer throw at Bridge of Allan Games with a throw of 117’ and continues to impress with his Caber Tossing. Not to be outdone, younger brother David represented Scotland in the British Schools Championship in Antrim, Northern Ireland recently

HIGHLAND SAFARIS HEAVY EVENTS: Stuart Anderson, Killin - 239; David Colthart, Blair Atholl 149; Lorne Colthart, Blair Atholl - 147; Pete Hart, Glenisla – 117, Jamie Thexton, Bridge of Gaur – 109; David Colthart jnr, Blair Atholl – 107.

Schools Challenge

A new Schools Highland Games throws competition will take place prior to Kenmore Games on Wednesday 1 July. Breadalbane Academy pupils will compete against the Northern Schools Highland Games Association from Lochaber in four events at the Games field starting at 4pm. Lochaber pupils have been taking part in similar competitions for some time, but Breadalbane pupils have only been involved with our traditional throws this term. Thanks to a SPORTSMATCH award received by Perthshire Highland Games Association, light weight equipment has been purchased and one of our Perthshire Heavyweight athletes has been into Breadalbane to give a guiding hand.

Last year’s Heavyweight Champion, Pete Hart, returned to the competition arena at Alyth Show last weekend with wins in all four disciplines. With the two leaders in the Highland Safaris League opting to go to Oldmeldrum instead of Alyth it means that only nine points separates the first six in the League so competition will be keen at Kenmore.

Only 4 Perthshire dancers competed at Alyth, but they will be out in force again at Kenmore where there is a separate confined to Perthshire section.

Junior pipers 18 and under will also be able to gain points

HIGHLAND SAFARIS HEAVY EVENTS: Stuart Anderson, Killin - 49; Lorne Colthart, Blair Atholl - 47; David Colthart, Blair Atholl 45; Ali. Marshall, Blair Atholl - 43; Jamie Thexton, Bridge of Gaur and David Colthart jnr, Blair Atholl – 40.

DANCING: Jillian Kennedy, Aberfeldy and Melissa Collins , Blairgowrie – 232; Isla Bendall, Crieff - 200; Ailidh Lang, Callander - 176; Lyndsey Douglas, Birnam – 127; Yvonne Kennedy, Aberfeldy – 89

The next Games in the Perthshire circuit will be on Wednesday 1 July. Schools challenge at 4pm; confined to Perthshire dancers at 5.30pm; Confined to Perthshire Heavy events and Junior Piping at 6pm

New Shot Putt record!

The sun shone again for Blackford Highland Games as the second event in the Highland Safaris Heavyweight League got underway. Nine athletes (including five under 21 years) competed, resulting in a win for Lorn Colthart from Blair Atholl, with Stuart Anderson 2 points behind and dad David Colthart just one point further back. It was a frustrating day for Stuart with three first places in the Shot, Hammer and Caber, a “no throw” in the weight for distance yet in the 16lb Shot Putt he threw 45’ 3” for a new Perthshire record.

In the PHGA Dancing league 9 dancers competed. Points earned come from prizes in the open Premier competition – 88 points for the top placed Perthshire dancer in each group; 56 points for the next placed Perthshire dancer etc. (1 point for competing but not in prize list.)

HIGHLAND SAFARIS HEAVY EVENTS: Stuart Anderson, Killin - 49; Lorne Colthart, Blair Atholl - 47; Jamie Thexton, Bridge of Gaur – 26; David Colthart jnr, Blair Atholl – 25; David Colthart 24; Ali Marshall, Blair Atholl -22.

DANCING: Jillian Kennedy, Aberfeldy and Ailidh Lang, Callander - 176; Melissa Collins , Blairgowrie – 144; Isla Bendall, Crieff - 112; Yvonne Kennedy, Aberfeldy – 89; Rachel McLagan , Blairgowrie - 88

The next Games in the Perthshire circuit will be on Saturday 20 June at Alyth Agricultural Show. Confined to Perthshire Heavy events start at 2.30pm approximately. There is no separate confined competition for the dancers.

Athletes please remember to wear your Highland Safaris vest or face the consequences............!

We're all systems go........................

The Perthshire Games season got off to a sunny start at the Atholl Gathering on Sunday. In the Highland Safaris Heavyweight League ten athletes (including four under 21 years) took part in a closely fought competition which resulted in a win for Stuart Anderson from Killin with three first places and one second place.

In PHGA Dancing league 18 dancers competed. The junior trophy was won by Jillian Kennedy from Aberfeldy, and the senior trophy was shared between Melissa Collins from Blairgowrie and Ailidh Lang from Callander.

HIGHLAND SAFARIS HEAVY EVENTS: There was an error in the hammer result with Ali Marshall's throw being missed out in the prize list. He threw 93' making him 3rd, so the over-all points are: Stuart Anderson -27; Lorne Colthart, Blair Atholl - 23; Ali Marshall, Blair Atholl -22; Jamie Thexton, Bridge of Gaur – 14; David Colthart jnr, Blair Atholl – 11; Grant Watson, Alyth - 8

Launch of Major New Sponsorship

Perthshire Highland Games Association is pleased to announce the launch yesterday of our new sponsorship with Highland Safaris, Scotland’s Premier Land Rover Safari and Event Management Company. Julie Riddell of Highland Safaris said “The Heavyweight events are always the highlight of any Highland Games and Highland Safaris are delighted to be the new sponsor of the Perthshire Heavyweight League. Also, through Highland Safaris Sponsorship combined with the support of SPORTSMATCH, more youngsters will be encouraged to compete in what is one of Scotland’s and the world’s most celebrated and famous of activities, safeguarding the events for the future.

The Championship League for Perthshire Heavyweight athletes will now be called the Highland Safari Heavyweight League and athletes will compete at fifteen Highland Games across Perthshire throughout the summer. League winners and under 21 years league winners will be presented with their awards at Pitlochry Highland Games in September.

In addition to our Highland Games season, PHGA are now able to offer local school children an opportunity to participate in a new “Heavy Events” initiative. Along with sponsorship from Highland Safaris and with support from the Scottish Executive funded SPORTSMATCH scheme, light weight equipment suitable for Primary and Secondary age has been purchased. Linking with Breadalbane Academy in the first instance athletes will liase with School staff to offer advice in the traditional style of throws which we have in Scotland. Raymond McIntosh, Head of PE in Breadalbane will use this equipment for a mini Highland Games this summer. "This is an excellent initiative which will benefit our local youngsters in a variety of ways. Firstly: they will have the opportunity to experience "new" activities which will improve their health and fitness. Secondly: it will promote an important part of our Highland heritage. Thirdly: it links in perfectly with the government’s latest educational initiative - namely, "The curriculum for excellence". It is made all the better by the fact that a local business has sponsored the initiative."

The SPORTSMATCH award of £1328 will also see the training days which PHGA have organised for a few years being extended to include weight training sessions to be held in the Atholl Leisure Centre Pitlochry. The Throws sessions will concentrate on the four events in the Highland Safaris Heavyweight League, namely Shot Putt, Throwing the Hammer, Throwing the Weight for Distance and Tossing the Caber.

Announcing the new sponsorship Stevie Ryder, Chairman of PHGA said “I am delighted to welcome Highland Safaris as our new sponsor. The sponsorship has enabled us to secure a SPORTSMATCH award. These awards mean that we as an Association are able to continue to support and encourage athletes in raising their standards, so providing greater entertainment for Highland Games spectators.”

SPORTSMATCH is an award scheme that supports grass roots sport projects that encourage participation at community level, especially youth groups. In Scotland, SPORTSMATCH is funded by the Scottish Government and administered by sportscotland.

SPORTSMATCH aims to match commercial business sponsorship on a £ for £ basis and has three primary objectives:

• to encourage businesses to sponsor community sports

• to foster lasting partnerships between business and community sport

• to further develop and improve community access to sport through quality business sponsorships

Training Night

US athlete Larry Brock along with Sean Betz will be in Pitlochry on WEDNESDAY 16 JULY to conduct a clinic. 6.30pm start.

This is a day later than John spoke about at Kenmore. Reason being Larry got his dates mixed up and is in Ireland on Monday and Tuesday.

This will be the third time Larry has taken a training session and it's well worth coming along and joining in. It's always good to get a different slant on our traditional events.

See you then

GAMES CANCELLED DUE TO FLOODING

With regret, the 2004 Atholl & Breadalbane Agricultural Show & Highland Gathering and Perth Highland Games have both been cancelled. These games were scheduled for the weekend of 14/15 August. Severe and unseasonal weather conditions have brought flooding to many parts of Perthshire, closing roads and causing significant damage to houses and business premises. The games venues at both Aberfeldy and Perth have been affected by flooding making it impossible to guarantee spectator and competitor safety. The current wet weather is predicted to abate over the next couple of days. Sunshine is even expected. Unfortunately, this will not provide adequate time for the games venues to dry out sufficiently. It is not anticipated that any further Highland Games will be adversely affected in this manner.
